Kick Out the Annoying, the Negative, the Never Been Used and the Small Things this New Year
I started my year, by doing a quick room by room scan and simplifying of all my personal things.
(1) I removed everything that annoyed me. I had a shirt that was in good condition and fit me well. But it didn’t feel good on my skin. I wore it a few times in 2011. But I just didn’t feel good when I wore it. Goodbye!
(2) I removed things that I got bad / negative vibes from or I’ve associated with bad / sad memories. I had a jacket that reminded me of the time when my wife and I had a bad argument. Goodbye! If you’ve got anything like that, give it to someone you don’t know. You can also smash or burn it (it’s more cathartic that way).
(3) I looked for stuff that I never used in 2011 (January is a good time to do this). If you haven’t used it the whole 2011, remove it from your life. You will never use it. Let another person benefit from it.
(4) I fixed the small things that I saw everyday but never had the chance to give time to. The crack on the steps, the drawer with no knob, etc. Even if they’re small, they still get our attention and make us feel bad until we’ve fixed them. Deal with them (or get someone who will).
After successfully doing all this, I remembered what David Allen said about ‘closing open loops’.
Completion of open loops, whether they be major projects or boxes of old stuff we’ve yet to purge and organize, prepares the ground for cleaner, clearer, and more complete energy for whatever shows up. -David Allen, Ready for Anything
Indeed, after doing a quick simplifying round, I feel ready for anything this 2012!
Simplifying,
Danny
